Operating at a national level, Grains Research & Development Corporation (GRDC), and Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), invest a major percentage of producers’ levies charged at point of sale back into research and development in the production phase of the grain and livestock industries. At a state level Department of Primary Industries & Regional Development (DPIRD) role is to grow and protect Western Australia’s agricultural and food sector. DPIRD works with industries and businesses throughout the sector helping them identify and capitalise on opportunities for growth as well as to manage and overcome obstacles. These three groups often engage the services of the Gillamii Centre in extension projects involving on farm trials on our members properties.

Annual feed budget for sheep enterprises

This tool can be used to estimate the supplementary feed requirements of a sheep enterprise for a single year. The calculator provides a broad estimate of the feed requirements for a single class of sheep as well as an average feed requirement on a monthly basis to maintain condition in adult sheep and grow weaners at a moderate rate. The tool gives outputs in either a graph or table.

Condition Scoring Sheep

Is an easy and accurate method of estimating the condition or 'nutritional well being' of your sheep flock. It requires an assessment of the amount of muscle and fat covering the backbone and the short ribs of each sheep.

ASBVs (Australian Sheep Breeding Values Sheep Genetics)

Identification of livestock is required by law under the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management (Identification and Movement of Stock and Apiaries) Regulations 2013 [BAM (IMSA) Regulations].

The regulations also require the use of the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS).

Key Grazing Levels (FOO Targets)

Grazing management in winter and spring in South West Western Australia (SW WA) can manipulate the quality, quantity and composition of pasture. These pasture changes can increase livestock feed efficiency and productivity, reduce insect populations and improve pasture persistence.

Clay Testing & Spreading

Across Western and South Australia there are many millions of hectares of deep sand or sand over clay-rich subsoils that are used for agricultural production. However, these sandy soils present a range of challenges due to their poor water holding capacity, inherent low fertility, extremes of pH, low levels of microbial activity and vulnerability to wind erosion.
