Summary
This project will support Caring for our Country targets and will deliver on-ground support, communication and capacity building within the Gillamii area. Activities will address soil management issues such as wind erosion and improve land manager knowledge and skills. The project officer will manage on-ground activities, provide community leadership, seek funding opportunities and provide support for the Gillamii Centre.
Outcome
This investment will
Work with South Coast NRM and other providers of this service across the South Coast Region to ensure a strategic approach to planning and delivery is undertaken
Increase ability of 10 land managers to address wind erosion through improved soil management methods, field days and workshops
Improve knowledge and skill levels in NRM of 135 land managers through extension and access to support and technical information
Establish 12.5km of protective fencing, establish 20.4ha of shelter belts/buffers and establish 84ha of herbaceous perennials to ameliorate the effects of wind erosion
Conduct 9 workshops and field days to facilitate change, improve knowledge, to inspire and provide capacity
Develop and implement strategies to increase community engagement and knowledge in NRM
In conjunction with South Coast NRM develop a strategy that identifies priority areas for investment to maximise outcomes highlighted in the 2009 Business Plan. This strategy will ensure that projects are both achievable and good value for money
Evaluate how the engagement of the community has translated into meaningful long-term practice change
Support South Coast NRM Southern Incentives program
Support the implementation of the externally funded projects that contribute to Caring for our Country targets. This includes the Farm Ready Industry Grants “Increasing salt land pasture adoption” and other Gillamii Centre projects with agreement from South coast NRM
Undertake all on-ground works in such a manner that does not result in an increase in the incidence of invasive species (including phytophthora dieback)
Ensure that, where possible, revegetation used to address wind erosion is implemented in such a manner so as to also achieve additional benefits such as improved biodiversity (i.e. the use of mixed biodiversity plantings to link remnant vegetation), and/or reduced water erosion, salinity, nutrient inputs and water table height.
