Resilient Country, Connected Communities: Planning for Landscape Renewal in the Inland Great Southern

Period: 2026
Funding Body: Great Southern Development Commission
Funds: $10,000
Project Officers: Hilary Watterson & Jenna Walliser

Summary

Through this project, Gillamii, with support from the Great Southern Development Commission, aims to build drought resilience across the Inland Great Southern by engaging landholders and community members in planning for revegetation and landscape restoration. The project will strengthen local knowledge of how revegetation supports erosion control, biodiversity, ecosystem health, and long-term climate resilience.

Working alongside growers, community groups, and the Tambellup Community Cropping Group, the project will deliver practical education, provide accessible revegetation resources, and identify suitable restoration sites across the region. These activities will help landholders plan and implement revegetation works that strengthen landscape connectivity and support resilient farming systems.

By combining community engagement, education, and strategic planning, the project will contribute to healthier landscapes, increased social connection, and stronger regional capacity to respond to drought and climate pressures.

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Build community capacity and awareness of how revegetation contributes to drought resilience, soil stability, reduced erosion, and improved ecosystem health.

  • Deliver practical education and resources that support landholders to plan and implement revegetation suited to Inland Great Southern landscapes.

  • Strengthen community connections by engaging growers, volunteers, and local groups—including the Tambellup Community Cropping Group—in shared learning and landscape-planning activities.

  • Identify and map suitable revegetation sites across the region, supporting targeted restoration efforts consistent with regional priorities such as the South Coast Macro Corridor Project and Gondwana Link.

  • Promote long-term resilience by supporting landholders to adopt practices that improve biodiversity, habitat connectivity, and landscape function.
